Abandoned Velma by ~nebriniel

i saw this earlier and LOVED IT but then the person posted the artist’s motivation/inspiration and it filled me with such intense rage.

from their diviantart, emphasis mine:

I’ve seen numerous fanarts of Velma, depicting her as some über curvy and sexy and geeky fantasy material… and for some reason, I wanted to draw the opposite - a tubby Velma, an out of shape Velma, a having-finished-with-the-mystery-squad-letting-herself-go Velma… I mean, that happens, right? People get done with what they think are their glory days and kind of just… exist instead of living.

So here we have Velma that’s been stood up on a date. I picture this being her first date with that particular guy, but not the first time she’s been abandoned like that.

Instead of distress, I wanted to show her as being used to this sort of thing by now - she’s gotten into a habit of bringing a book along with her, even. I would say she never held out much hope for succeeding with the date tonight, but, nevertheless, tried to make herself look nice. She’s not grieving much, as her outlook on the whole situation is rather removed and philosophical after so many failures.

I wonder why she keeps trying?

when i saw this, i was like “oh man! this is awesome! look at velma looking a-may-zing in that great dress, drinking a glass of wine, reading a book. looks like paradise!”

but the artist made this thinking “velma lets her self go, gets fat, and then gets stood up on dates. and she is so used to being treated like garbage, that she just assumes it will happen, and brings a book” because that’s totally what happens, right? you get fat and nobody wants to hang out with you or date you or be seen with you??

this artist is a fucking dumb-ass.

I wonder if the artist has any idea what they’ve created here - which is actually a pretty apt commentary in that, hey, here’s this woman who a lot of people think is totally awesome, who is completely attractive, who seems pretty self-sufficient and has had a lot of interesting things going on in her life - but, oh, man, she’s “used to” being stood up so she just takes it like it’s her due and doesn’t ever question why it’s supposed to be her fault. This artist has created a portrait of so many fat people that I know who are AWESOME and who genuinely believe that there is something wrong with them morally and socially because they’ve been told time and again that being fat is some kind of mortal sin.

And, yeah, we get all up in arms about “confidence is sexy” because, hey, it’s a fucking cliche. But there really are self-fulfilling prophecies; we learn not to see people flirt with us because we don’t believe anyone could possibly flirt with us. We hate our own bodies because, hey, we’re supposed to, right?

And meanwhile, to some objective observer, this fat woman in this picture is just hanging out, looking fly, reading a book and drinking some wine.

One of the most effective tools of oppression is to make the oppressed believe it is their fault, that they deserve it. And fat people are really fucking good at hating ourselves.

tl;dr: love the picture, think the artist is probs a fat-hating douche who has helped perpetuate the loathing so many fat people feel for themselves. Good times.

This is probably the prettiest Velma I’ve ever seen. Why’d the artist have to add that shitty narrative?

This is maybe one of the most interesting things I’ve seen come across my dash lately. I’m fascinated by the idea that an artist could create a piece like this with such a sad, horrible little story in mind. And yet when I (and clearly many others) look at this picture without knowing that narrative, we don’t see it as being sad at all. We see a beautiful woman having what appears to be a very pleasant evening. She’s gorgeous and comfortable, and seems to be enjoying an activity that makes her happy, reading with a glass of wine. Interpretation is everything. And this really does drive home the point that the creator’s intent doesn’t mean anything in the end.

Reblogging for commentary. I was really disturbed by the story the artist told to go with this piece the first time I saw it on my dash. I find the Velma in this picture delightful and I want to sit down with her (when she’s not reading, can’t interrupt!) and have a glass of wine and talk and laugh and maybe even flirt. She’s so great, and I hate that this is seen as “letting herself go” and just… ugh. :( Beautiful art, horrible backstory. I’m going to reject the artist’s canon and substitute my own. This Velma is wonderful and deserves all the love and happiness.

When I was younger, I always wondered why my mother’s oldest sister was never around; why she chose to stay away from everyone and why she cut her and her family off from my own? I don’t wonder anymore…

As the oldest of my mother’s children, I have the most responsibilities. I’m often (even when it comes to my parents) the adult in the house. When my mom and step-dad fought, I had to be the voice of reason and break it up and shield my siblings from the sight. And whenever they run into trouble of any sort, they call me and ask if I can help. A built-in-babysitter, they always told me I was. For years, I thought that was a joke, but as I start the New Year, I realize that they subconsciously meant it.

Right now, they are all sick. Some cough or something. This is particularly bad considering my mother already has her fair share of medical issues (I hate to point fingers, but it’s probably in part due to the years of abuse she’s had to deal with). Tomorrow is my brother’s 11th birthday and I would like to be there, however, if I go, they have asked that I stay a few days because they really need help. I understand entirely. But they’re always needing help. I mean, part of the reason I moved up here to the great Pacific Northwest was so I could help my mother after she got this supposed surgery that never happened and more than likely never will. Up until recently, I have tried my best to help them with everything. In exchange, I got my car and they help provide for me when I need it. But I can’t help but get the feeling that they just want me to drown in their misery with them and I don’t want to do that. At the same time, I want to help as best I can.

It hurts that I have to think that they have ulterior motives. But I’m 20 almost 21 trying to start a life of my own and I can’t have this dependency on me. I can’t… bring myself to think that they don’t care but I sometimes feel like they wouldn’t help me at all if they didn’t think it would benefit them somehow. What if I was working? How would they handle this obstacle themselves?

I understand now why my Aunt left and never came back. They would devour her and rip her life from her and turn her and her family into them. Misery truly loves company. I get it now.

I feel like I’m teetering between happiness and depression like a bauble unsure whether to delve into the ocean or to stay afloat on its waves. Tomorrow, I will go and stay a few days even though I was going to go get the files off of my laptop on Thursday (since the Stepfather can’t be bothered to do anything in a timely manner) and go apply to some places in person on Friday. I guess, I will have to postpone.

Edit: Was it not enough that they ruined everything…? Now I have to continually help them and it sucks. It really sucks.

My Deepest Apologies and a Take on Gun Laws

I’m truly sorry for the families and the community affected by the tragedies of yesterday…both in China and in Connecticut. And although, it’s probably considered inappropriate to address the whole gun law thing right now, there really is not agoodtime to address such a thing.

The fact of the matter is that crime and atrocities are going to happen regardless. Taking a look at the gun laws and events where guns have been the problem like with Treyvon Martin or any other shooting that’s happened recently (whether that be in the states or elsewhere in the world), of course you see the problem as the guns. It’s only natural to want to change gun laws when people are using them to kill other people. But these two mirrored events show a perfect example of how changing the gun laws would have no effect on atrocities such as this one. An eerily similar event happened in China today as well and there was no gun involved. The manslicedthem.

When someone is out to hurt someone else, whether they technically be in their right mind or not (although, you’d be hard-pressed to convince me that theywerementaly well), they will hurt them. And it will not be until you detain them or kill them that they stop. Putting rational thought to crazy people doesn’t work.We are the problem.It’s so cliche to say but guns don’t kill people; people kill people. If we want to kill someone, we are going to whether that be by gun, by knife, or with our own two hands.

You might say that ‘Well, if we had required psychological evaluations of people trying to buy guns…’ And I would ask if you honestly thought that they wouldn’t be able to obtain a gun illegally without having to be evaluated.

The fact of the matter is that the best we can do is hope that things like this don’t happen. Put in better security systems (especially schools). Metal detectors are fine and dandy except when the gunman shoots down every one in his way. We need more advanced ways of preventing this. Taking the guns away isn’t going to do anything except cause situations where people rallyforguns instead of against. We need to think smarter than criminals and crazy people because either way they’re going to think of other ways to kill people.
